The Rise and Fall of Serie A: What Went Wrong?

  • Publisert 3 måneder siden

    HITC Sevens

    Runtime: 15:53

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Serie A was widely considered to be the best league in world football.
Italian clubs had the best players, the most fans, and they won the most continents trophies, but in the late 1990s and particularly during the 2000s, this all began to unravel.
Serie A is now only ranked as the fourth best league in Europe, behind La Liga, the Premier League, and the Bundesliga.
In this brief documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the rise and fall, and potential rise again of Serie A, and what led to the demise of Italy's top flight over the last 20 years.

How many of the best players have move there? Are you mainly talking about Ronaldo? He`s reaching his mid 30`s, the EPL still attracts brilliant players and there are a number of rich owners that have clubs in that league, having no crowds will effect every clubs ability to spend big money anyway, when do you think an Italian club will win the champs league again?

What happen to Serie A? Football evolved, 90 Serie A was bassed in players not proyect, only one team had a proyect AC Milan and was the most succeful team even Inter with Ronaldo only win 1 or 2 tittles. Milan got old and doesnt sell his stars, bought young players that doesnt work and that was the end of Serie A until Juventus had a proyect and thats why they are the best Serie A club now, inter know had a proyect with Conte and that why they are the seconf best team ik Serie A, Atalanta haf a proyect and that why they are the third best team in Serie A, Milan start a proyect and itd getting better every year, even Italy is not playing cattenaccio anymore and are playong more posession football

What's wrong with this channel? Serie A was bad between 2013-2018 but now it's back. 2nd best player in the world plays in Serie A. It was the most competitive league in 2019-2020 where the title was decided on the last day. 4 teams scored more than 80 points. 7 teams are participating in Europe. Atalanta, Juventus did well in UCL while Inter reached the UEL final.

Serie A has declined. Of course. Then again. I feel Serie A tried to keep the atmosphere and style from 90's/2000's. It did not work and there also came financial problems. The other leagues have changed. Unfortunately in such a way that one no longer wants to watch football anymore. Serie A and Lazio I watch though. Just a point about stadiums. A nice modern stadium does not give a good football team. In the end stadiums will collapse on their own if nothing is done so of course I hope Italian clubs can make their stadium plans real. However. I think people make too much out if it. We in Lazio want a new stadium and there has been talks about it since 2004. However. It is possible to play football in stadio Olimpico. Actually at such a level that Lazio are competing there in Champions League. Napoli have had good success in Champions League while playing in their "toilet stadium". Kind of exaggerated this stadium talk.

Although Juventus dominates Serie A the past 10 years if you look at the league this year it has better parity and higher class lower table teams making Serie A Football a so much better watch than the Premier league and LA Liga. I would say in terms of the levels of play Serie A is the best league in the world right now.

You didn't mention this, long story short: in the 70s all of the countries were making debt, they were just spending more than how much they could afford. In 80s and 90s obviously (almost) all the countries of the world started to give all their money back, but not Italy. Italy continued to make debt, and the 90s were a gold era because of that. They were just paying but not using their money. All of this came down exactly in 2006: there was an enourmous scandal named "tangentopoli" that included all of the country economy and a lot of big companies, "calciopoli" was just a part of that bigger scandal of mafia and corruption. Italy still suffers from those years, I'm sorry if it's not understendable

Well this video needs an update as we can talk now about the rise of the serie A again. The style of playing is so much entertaining than before, a lot of goals, maybe some better performances at the European level and and at least like 6 teams whose can beat every other team in the league and the most important thing is that la liga has stalled in their progression. For me after the premier league, serie A is the second best right now

When I worked for a very well known online sports gambling company around 8 years ago, I used to write for the blog, and did a weekly betting review of Serie A. I used to link up my article to our betting markets until I saw that there were no odds for a number of the Serie A games, more than half, and it was already very late in the week. I called the main centre in Gib and asked what the problem was. What they told me was (and it was April-time) that when they see a lot of 'unnatural' activity going on, betting-wise, they pull the odds because the match(es) is being fixed (It's worse near the season's end when some sides have nothing to play for - a bung seems very attractive to everyone). I was in shock, albeit knowing that corruption in Italy was widespread, and so I didn't have Serie A odds for matches because its all a scam. All the UK bookies work together on this in Gib, they know it goes on, and no-one says anything. It's not just missed financial possibilities, inadequate stadia and poor management, Italian football is rotten to the core.

All big European first leagues are the same nowadays - 1 or 2 teams who win everything, while the rest pick up the scraps. Bundesliga - just Bayern; Serie A - just Juventus; Ligue 1 - just PSG; La Liga - Real Madrid and Barcelona; Portuguese Superliga - Benfica and Porto; Premier League - City and Liverpool. I remember back in the 2000's how much fun it was to watch all of those leagues since there were so many great matches and it seemed as there were at least 4 teams fighting with the same chances for first place. So it's not just Serie A, it's all of football. But that's what all those huge money do to such a sport. I mean it's no wonder that when someone like Mbappe (who ffs just hits a ball) is paid 1 million dollars PER MONTH why this sport became so degraded.

The timing of this is funny. Serie A is on the rise again! There is a lot happening in Italy. A lot of new investment. It still has a ways to go to be comparable to the 90's but could any league reach such unprecedented heights again? That era has a mythical status now. But genuine stars are beginning to go back there and Serie A is a potential goldmine. Overseas investors are snapping Italian clubs' up. PE groups are circling and offering billions for a stake in the new Global Media Company. Which was backed by all 20 clubs. And the new stadium law enabling clubs to begin construction without the usual red tape bureaucracy will bring huge benefits. Btw, it was 1952-1999 when Italy had an undisputed monopoly on the highest transfer fees. From Ronaldo at £19.5m when he left Barca to Inter in 97 to Vieri at £32m to Inter in 99. Last one was Crespo to Lazio for £36m in 2000 but before that, even in the odd year that a Premier League or La Liga club broke the record, 7 or 8 of the years highest fees would inevitably be by Italian clubs. They were the best in terms of results in European Competitions, they had the vast majority of the best players in the world, monumental arenas packed with the highest average attendances, a top national team, even at youth level they won by far the most U-21 international tournaments, were the richest, even as late as 2002, 5 out of the top 10 forbes' richest clubs were Italian and around half of the leagues clubs were owned by rich oligarchs, they had the best training methods, coaches & tactics and it was by far the most watched league in the world. There are many reasons it 'fell' but I'd be here all night. So in simple terms its strength became its achilles heel. It became so competitive that clubs started to only care for numero uno, better if it was to the detriment of rivals' and it led to a mismanagement of funds. The FFP rule and how fast it was implemented didn't help either. Especially as other European leagues and teams had started the globalization trend of football by then. But now they seem to finally be working together. On better infrastructure, at bringing in alternate sources of revenue and are beginning to see Serie A as a brand. Its been on the up for some time now. There are cycles and Serie A has started to turn the wheel again!

To me it is all about popularity. Back in the 90s in England, the Italian league was painted as being of top quality. Then I used to watch it and it was so defensive and boring that I would change the channel to watch the English division 1 (Championship now) as it was way more entertaining. Later on I lived in Germany who also had good football, but going to the games there was boring, very poor football. I now live in Australia and have seen Pirlo and Heskey in the same match. Who played better and scored, ha ha, Heskey. You can look as good as you like, if you do not do what is required, you are nothing. The best football I have seen is from Columbia 1990, but were they the best team, no. If I have to give a trophy to the most ruthless team in International football, Germany wins. They are useless but tend to win a lot.

The British League was in decadence during the 80s, banned form UEFA competitions for 5 years and then created the Premier League and the rest is history. Italian football is not having a good time and I can say the same for Spanish La Liga were only 3 teams win money. EPL and Bundesliga is more competitive although Bayern is making it look easier.

Italian football is always classic, unique and hard pact structured. Yes, there are some scandals, paupers, bankrupts and lot of problems were made them deep down. After Calciopoli scandal, the image of Italian football was totally let down, with more controversies, one sided matches, decisions against other teams, racism were still going on. I want AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and Roma/Atalanta to dominate UCL and Florentina, Lazio, Napoli to fight hard in UEL. Also Italian football team must gear up to go for Euro and World cup.
