Why Everton CANNOT Afford Failure Under Carlo Ancelotti

Despite a run of three consecutive defeats, Everton have still had a bright start this season in the Premier League, thanks to new arrivals like Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, and James Rodriguez, along with the goals of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Lots of people fancy the Toffees to break into the top six this season, under Champions League winning boss Carlo Ancelotti, but in reality, Everton cannot afford to settle for anything less.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a deep dive into Everton's finances, how much money Farhad Moshiri has put into the club, and whether it is sustainable without European football.

No identity and no plan. Why sign all those random players to begin with instead of asking the coaches what they want. Richcarlison was Marco Silva signed, not club. They got lucky as Andre Gomes also played well last season only to be benched now. 5 loses in a row atm. Carlo is not a builder, he is a fantastic man manager but is not a coach with a longterm vision. Evertons plan is “throw money at it!” and hope for the best.

Good video, cheers. As a Leeds fan I know all about 'doing a leeds'. To me the worst thing is that wages to turnover %. In 2002 Leeds was 90%. If Everton are at 85% then the money available for anything else is getting tiny. So many clubs are doing this 'gamble'. I would love world football to ban it. There should be a limit of 60% of club turnover to wages. Also on relegation that would mean player contracts must have this limit set so wages would drop massively. Hence the unfair parachute payments would no longer be required so could be scrapped. Leeds have had to fight to get back against clubs with 2 or 3 times the turnover purely cus of parachute money. The one problem with what I've put is it would have to be staged in over a few years cus of existing player contracts. But it could be done.

@Tyler Cady Yup, not to forget the spending spree in 2017 followed by a relegation flirt and a complete thrashing in Europa (8-1 Atalanta), I remember West ham having the same faith a year prior to that and they still havent recovered, spending smart instead of large should always be priority for midtable clubs.

@RPG I mean in terms of general spending over the last 4 years, I think Everton will finish 6th this season but so they should finish around that area with the investment they have had, people will give them credit for doing so and say they are doing better than expected when for a while they have just been quietly failing in there expectations

Our consequences of not finding serious sums of financial investment - decade upon decade upon decade - has only started to bite in recent years. Yes, it is noble if Kenwright wanted only trustworthy hands in control of the club, but the rapidly soaring levels of progress our rivals have kick-started this century are going to be very hard to match - let alone catch-up or even overtake. Getting (arguably) the best manager in the world was absolutely the right decision. When the man who Liverpool's board betrayed (Rafael Benitez) after the Spaniad won them the Champions' League - something Houllier couldn't - and with a settled home in Merseyside, the only reason for turning us down was that he believed we were going down with no hope of salvation. For this reason alone, we are very, very grateful to Ancelotti. Strategically, he's no one-trick-pony, as post-lockdown 1 he had to juggle together teams just to counter our opposition's XI, instead of imposing our own to them - simply as a consequence of squad imbalances in key areas. Getting us out of jail - for now, at least - he finally received the backing of Marcel Brands and as a team, the Everton top brass helped Carlo construct a squad capable of fielding a 4-3-3 XI that could enhance performance in virtually all areas, hence the better results. Firing the entire medical and physical personnel strongly suggested that things needed to change - and fast. Not having a full rest and pre-season will hurt us more than our rivals - even though we haven't played European football since 2017 (as this video correctly highlights). So European qualification AND BOTH a Summer rest, followed by the mother of all pre-season intensity acting in preparation for 2021-22 (i.e. the F.A. Cup) is no longer a negotiable scenario for the club to fail. Many journalists love to build stories up. This one however, is more than justified. You need a hell of a lot of luck in life. We need a lot of things to work for us this season - and not least a vastly-increased stadium draw to commercial investment. It means we have to be able to beat teams by more than sheer steamrolling at home and when possible: away. We have to be able to control games, by passing the ball as a team; something some Evertonians are not used to, partly because of certain age groups. This is not going to be easy by any means and there'll be many lows, as well as highs. But if Ancelotti-Brands-Moshiri can't pull this off - no-one will.

As an Everton fan, our spending compared to complete lack of success has worried me for a few years now. The Moshiri era brought great optimism when he came in but we simply haven’t seen the improvements on the pitch. Not his fault, put it down to some poor recruitment under Koeman and Steve Walsh in 2017, we’re still suffering the financial scars of that. Plus it is remarkably hard to consistently break the higher end of the league without major expenditure. If not us, then whoever does it next will have to spend similar. Just hope it doesn’t cripple us trying to “live the dream” like Leeds did all those years ago!

14 dager siden

@JimmyNDriver Leicester are probably the closest team in the league to breaking into the "big 6", yet they don't spend exorbitant amounts. They fund most of their transfers with sales, and have the best scouting in the division. So you don't "need" to spend a lot and see what sticks, you need to spend smartly

The bit about Everton being the exception to the rule when it comes to league tables being in wage order cuts deep. We were under Moyes too, but we didn't pay close to what our neighbours did, and still competed.

14 dager siden
Empress Touch

@mavis cruet: Players who are fitter, stronger, can run for longer; they cost more and more in wages. Then throw-in the transfer fees going up and up. Then the lower club's owners whom are now far more wary of us preying for their best players - at cheap prices. The game improves and progresses in many ways. We have to keep up the competition, and it gets harder and harder. But we've got solid top brass. we now need solid, all-'round performances from all players and team. Our Women aren't doing too badly, given the FAW Super League competition from US stars looking for short-term work in lockdown. There's still hope.

Regrettably, the competition not only in the Premier League, but in Europe AND the rest of the world is immeasurably greater than 10/15/20 years ago. If we could make reverse time travel more than just science fiction, then yes, getting the money in so much earlier would've helped a lot - not least building on Kirkby a much bigger stadium that BMD can. We have to move forwards, not backwards. We've started to sign the right script though - at long last!

Jesus Christ. I used to be really up on Everton's finances, back when our fans were wanting to get rid of Kenwright. So many people were praying for a billionaire owner so we could be a european powerhouse. So glad we're winning everything now, and no longer in the financial strife we were in back in those days... It's genuinely difficult to love football these days.
