Why Football Is The Most Popular Sport on Earth

  • Publisert 2 måneder siden

    Runtime: 16:16

From Albania to Argentina, from the Premier League to the Campeonato Brasileiro, the popularity of football - or soccer - seemingly knows no bounds.
Whether it be in rich countries or poor countries, hot or cold, east or west, it doesn't appear to make any difference, football can thrive in any culture and any climate, and whilst sports like cricket and basketball are played and watched by hundreds of million of people across the globe, none come close to football.
So in this video, HITC Sevens asks why association football is so popular, what are the reasons for it's enduring and ever-growing popularity, and why some major countries like India and the USA haven't quite caught the football bug.

The American College Football system is the sport that is the biggest and most meaningful sport to America as a whole. Given that the games are tied to universities, organizations that basically won't die and will never leave, organizations that mean so much to everyone around them, it makes college football matter on an instinctual level in ways of professional sports don't. The pageantry and tradition of American college football is truly one of the great things to see about the United States, and I hope every person here gets to see it at some point.

13:55 coming from an American, what you just said is completely wrong. I have only met a few baseball fans in my life and all of them are older than 40. I would argue that basketball has overtaken baseball here considering I know a lot more basketball fans than baseball fans. And also American football is by far the most popular sport here.

Which nation will be a force in the international game: China, India, USA? Answer: China, because their gov't has a goal of winning the World Cup by 2050. Next comes America, who will have more success initially due to the HUGE youth structure. Sadly, India will not become a power.

I enjoy listening to your videos while studying for college. Because of explicit work people living in the same building that i lived in during my freshman year, i now need to have background noise while studying. I had my own room because of my diagnosed ADHD, but the guy in the hallway kept playing funky techno music on his speaker.... I used to play stuff on my headphones so that i can focus, and now that i am back in college (while working full time and taking online classes), i like to listen to your videos. Your voice is super relaxing!!!!

Leicester City vs Watford 2013 Championship play-off semi-final !! That should answer your question. in quick succesion we saw watford fans feeling dejected and experiencing despair when Knocheart dived and managed to get a penalty for leicester . about 2 minutes later , Almunia saved the penalty and the rebound and despair turned to relief and hope was restored and then that Troy Deeney goal got the fans experiencing joy ,jubilation and ecstasy . different sets of emotions and all within the space of a couple of minutes . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TnKvlQ2h7s&list=PLxgfpdh7Nv8AH7zzghMV98ViZudOuJ99O&index=118

I have played football.. or sort of that.. used a bundle of papers, sealed together with tape to form a ball, a damn sandal, and even an AA battery. The AA battery is quite funny tho. We played in the terrace of our classroom and the entire terrace getting quite dirty and sort of dusty. We jus found out that the battery was bust, and whatever chemical stored inside that stuff just pouring out, and create that sort of dusty thing. In later year, I just found out what is truly inside that battery and i just glad, that my brain didn't turned in to a pulp.

Actually there was a time when Football was the most popular sport in india. It was during the 1930s to 1970s. India won the Asian Games two times and produced many great talents like Chuni Goswami and PK Banerjee. Ahmed Khan of the 1930s was another one who played for Celtic during that period. Football was also a part of India's freedom struggle. In 1911, Mohun Bagan AC which is one of the oldest clubs in the world and also named as the National Club of India won their first IFA Shield title beating British team East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1. That game was watched by more than 100 thousand people and it united the people of India more than anything. That was a great moment for not only the club but also the country. Mohunbagan won their second IFA Shield in 1947, the year when India gained her independence. IFA Shield is probably the second oldest Football tournament in the world after FA Cup. Anyways, India defeated the Asian giants in football in that era and was one of the Asia's best football teams. But as you said things changed after the 1983 Cricket world cup win as the government focussed more on Cricket than in Football. From 1997 India's premier division football league started with the name of National Football League and changed it's name to the I-League in probably 2005. Sorry to say it wasn't very popular with respect to cricket. Although from 2014, Indian Super League has started which brought a lot of money and attention to the world football. In the initial years it was just a 2 months league but from last year AFC recognised it as the highest division league in India. Last year ISL was one of the most viewed Football leagues in the world along with La Liga and Premier League. After ISL started Indian team has done some developments in football as they qualified for the AFC Asian Cup in 2019, seven long years after our last qualification. Recently ISL league toppers are given chance to play in the Tier 1 club tournament of AFC which is AFC Champions League, FC Goa becoming the first team to qualify for it. So slowly India is progressing to become one of the top teams in Asia. Btw, big fan of your channel! Keep doing more interesting videos! Love ya❤️

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise that former colonies 'rejected' soccer, as they were out to form their own distinct culture separate from their home country. In the late 19th/ early 20th century cricket, rugby, and soccer were all popular in the US until baseball and American football began to rise in popularity. Australia also developed their own football code, and the part of the country that prefers Rugby League considered the founding of the sport to be 1906 in Sydney and not the 1895 schism in Huddersfield.

Although Cricket is a sport that was related with royal families and kind of presented as a leisure sports with 5 or more days match during Indian Colonial period. The countries in the Indian Subcontinent/ Oceania etc have turned that sports into local sports so that even poor can play all they need is a log of wood and ball. The introduction of ODI/T20 have shortened the watch time and improved the pace of the sports. Even more so than football because sixes and fours are more common in T20. They winning of Cricket world cup in 1983 seriously helped india with more money invested in Grassroots in Cricket rather than other sports and its clearly shown. Seriously you should make a history of football and Cricket in India? Many thanks if you do.

Just wanted to say that Baseball often has people that follow a single team instead of the general sport. Baseball games can be more than 2 hours, with 162 games in the season. For full time workers and busy people, this means many people wont care about other teams. Also, one other thing I wanted to say is Football is interesting because you get people who are only fans of one league, not the whole sport. I'm an American that watches multiple EPL matches religiously every weekend and dabbles in the Bundesliga occasionally, but I don't care for La Liga, Serie A, or the MLS.

Surely it spread in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, so don;t think B Empire had much to do with it. Football is easy, to play it you need a ball and maybe some jumpers, and until recently was democratic - that is you did not need to be very tall, nor muscle-bound, or particularly fast. That is unfortunately changing. Perhaps that will change the popularity one day. Hard to believe though that is

You asked if there are many fans who are primarily loyal to their team for their location? I'd say that's the main reason in the US. To be fair, many states are the size of countries, and there's a significant enough difference from one state to the next for it to create a natural "us vs them" feeling.

2 måneder siden
Adiun Tesserande
Adiun Tesserande

With the exception of the cities that host two or three teams in a single sport, it's almost exclusively location that attracts fans, save for those who happen to live so very far away from all teams that no 'local' aspect applies, like baseball fans from eastern Montana, for example, or hockey fans from southern Oregon. Even *with* cities that have multiple teams in one sport, geography is the key indicator of loyalty for most teams. Indeed, the only exception I can think of are the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA, who both play in the same arena, thus completely negating the whole 'they're closer to me' aspect.

In general, playing football is noncostly, so it’s accessibility is unparalleled, heck you don’t even need a real football, ppl can improvise from the goal to the ball. Sports like tennis, golf, American football etc will never ever be affordable thus never will be able to reach a wider demographic. 2nd the rules of football are inherently basic and not overly complex like American football has so many rules I’m sure the nfl rule book is like an atlas 😂

2 måneder siden
The Ice Man
The Ice Man

True . All the offside rule is very basic if you past the last opposing player ( not including the keeper ) you will be offside. And you can’t be offside in your own half . Unlike games like NFL whose rules are needlessly complex. And Football is a game that’s accessible to everyone. You don’t have to be tall or an athletic freak like in Basketball, NFL , Rugby . You can be a short player , or a tall one . You don’t necessarily have to be insanely athletic. Because football is game that’s played in the head . Gerson was never athletically great , but is one of the best Brazilian players to ever play the game , it was just that he was very smart in the mental side of the game.
