Did Project Big Picture Deserve More Consideration?

Pioneered by Liverpool and Manchester United, but highly favourable towards the rest of the so-called big six of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester City, Project Big Picture is an 18-page document of proposals that would represent the biggest shakeup of England football since the breakaway of the Premier League from the Football League in 1992.
Yesterday, after I made this video, Premier League clubs unanimously agreed not to endorse or pursue the plans as a whole, but it's unlikely to be the end of discussions with regards to supporting the EFL and further strengthening the hand of the biggest, richest, and most powerful teams in the Premier League.
In this video, HITC Sevens breaks down the details of Project Big Picture and passes a verdict on some of its merits and flaws.

Salut ladies and gents! Unfortunately I made this video before the Premier League teams made their decision, unsurprisingly, not to back Project Big Picture in its initial form, but due to scheduling I was unable to get it out before this morning. Nonetheless, it’s all still fairly relevant, since this certainly won’t be the last that we hear of discussions regarding a restructuring of English football. Peace and love to the best community on YouTube, Alfie. ✌🏽

Everybody is looking at this in too small of terms. There have been talk for a good couple of decades of a breakaway European competition amongst the top clubs. This proposal sets up, quite nicely, the easy possibility for the Big 6 to be able to just vote themselves out of the ELP and the FA and to be able to join a European league of the top clubs...or even some league beyond. Seriously, with the clubs no longer part of the EPL or FA, and not playing in any UEFA competition, what would keep them from creating a 30 or 40 player squad? Imagine a club like Man U playing in both a European League and a World League. On top of that, transfer fees will become astronomical as owners of clubs like Man City and PSG will use their vast wealth to "buy" wins.

It's a proposal that turns the stomach, especially the colluding of owners of traditional rivals Utd and Liverpool. I find the idea of 2 American sports franchise owners exercising a veto over other rival club take overs, even though it would be to our advantage as United fans, frankly appalling. To me this is merely the tip of the iceberg. Eventual their plan would evolve to 1) no relegation, and 2) a play-off style touring "summer bowl". They are feigning empathy for the EFL whilst seruptitiously trying to exploit the cash flow and loss of revenue caused by a pandemic to solidify their own empires ans simultaneously take away sportsmanship and level playing fields, with a bit of bribery thrown in as a sweetener, its vile and disgusting and no wonder they voted unanimously against it.

#ImWithESL But not the way it is approached right now, FIFA must plan such super leagues for every continent and a world club cup for winning teams of all super leagues, we can allow bias here like more clubs from some continents, as it also happens in champions league today. World cup should be expanded and European national competitions make no sense. I mean if European clubs and National teams are in fact so strong why not prove it, it's only a piece of cake right?? Who is to say which club will develop a potential star outside of Europe, but only because he/she didn't get proper chance he couldn't develop up to his full potential. I believe Chinese, Korean, Australian and even Indian clubs may be better than EFL league 1 or even EFL Championship clubs. Player growth shouldn't depend on whether they move to Europe or not. Lower League teams suffer financial crises anyway. There are people, investors, football enthusiasts that want to develop football in their country, but fans only watch European football. If ESL in every continent happens fans all over world will truly support their local football teams. Are people in different counties actually able to visit those great stadiums like Camp Nou, Allianz Arena, Ethiad Stadium. NO! This scenario will obviously reduce profits and global fan following of top clubs, but not necessarily viewership. They will still remain top tier teams, so at least in Europe they will become even more popular. I think overall financially it will be financially good for them rather. Football will then have achieved a feat no sport has ever been or even will achieve, "Sport that brings the World together". It will attract much more investors from around the world and fans all over the world will be really happy. Global exposure will now be possible for every club all over the world. Imagine possibilities!! This Idea may seem far'fetched but FANS HAVE ALL THE POWER. European clubs will be left powerless if fans are pro CONTINENTAL ESL. PS- I am not Against EFL or lower leagues just pro WORLD FOOTBALL.

I think the big problem is that the change in voting rights would no doubt be permenant. Then when the power balance has shifted the top 9 clubs could then change everything else. For example making a max 30 quid for away games, I reckon that would last a season. Then next thing we know, we have a league with no relegation or promotion, so as to maintain the value of the top clubs.

Scrapping the community shield, league cup (at least changing it), 18 team PL, 25% going to EFL...but I believe in democracy and each club should have a vote. Thank god this isn’t going ahead. Just because the top clubs want to distance themselves from the rest. How is that fair in any sense. Change and seeing other teams come and go is part of the sport. Tbh I actually quite like the idea of someone buying a club like Newcastle and making them a top team. It brings more competition, why tf does anyone want less competition? Just because the likes of Everton, wolves and Leicester are about to overtake the likes of arsenal and Tottenham in a few years.

Just gonna copy paste what I wrote on Stephen Howson's video on this: --------------------------------------------------------- The system needs restructure, and while this has good points it stinks of the current PL clubs wanting to remain in the money: Domestic League: Currently too many fixtures so going down to 18 isn't a bad idea. Championship could go down to 20 with Leagues 1 and 2, plus a new "League 3" to have 18 teams each to total the current 92. League Play-offs: Abolish them! They destroy the integrity of a league. Top 3 promoted, bottom 3 relegated. Simple! Also no domestic game should occur after the FA Cup Final. FA Cup: Restore its prestige! Only UEL and UCL final should happen after it. League Cup: Not to fussed if this goes, it's really just a Btec FA Cup with a weird 2-leg semi as all other rounds are one leg. It is a good opportunity for PL teams to give debuts though. Community Shield: Keep, should be the ceremonial season opener. Good for charity and fans. Only the UEFA Super Cup should happen before it. International Football: Whilst I still feel the Nation's League is pointless, the idea was to reduce international friendlies, so the fact that they now want more is rediculas. An end of season international event is a good idea. I would like to see a Home Nation championship style event again. Pre-season: Keep it as it is, it should be for training not money. Abolish the ICC - most pointless competition ever! Bureaucracy: A financial package should definitely be given to lower league to keep the pyramid standing. No money to be given to the FA - they earn enough. No executive control and no "2/3 big 9" veto either!

The TV share increase feels more like a bribe to push through the other more cynical bits. The entire thing is seemingly designed to have the appearance of helping out the lower league clubs. I can understand why fans of the clubs that don't have more voting power being granted to them, but a shake up of the system every few decades is only good for the game. At the end of the day, the owners are financially motivated, but for the TV and sponsorship money to go up the game and league will get more exciting and attractive for fans to pay subscriptions etc. I'm sure the same conversations were had when the premiership idea was floated and the same again when the efl lower leagues were changed to the current format.

Outside of the reduction in ticket prices & the redistribution of funding down to the lower leagues, as an Arsenal supporter and a fan of football in general, I was disgusted at the proposal that would ultimately destroy what the Premier League has built up over the 20 odd years and dismayed but not surprised that my club would benefit as a result. All clubs deserve a right to vote no matter how small or big they are and not only that, implementing relegation play offs merely awards teams who have a poor season as we regularly see in Germany where many existing Bundesliga clubs win the play off preventing a second tier team from capping that successful season off with promotion. Without the lower leagues, the Premier League wouldn't even exist.
